What Happened To Miley Cyrus?

In the current advertising world, I think its safe to say that sex sells.  Particularly with women in the music industry. For the most part, the industry follows the rule, “less is more”, when it comes to clothing.  Is that necessarily bad or good?  Some say that young women, mainly teenagers and children, follow the images that music artists portray.  “I want to dress like her”, “But Hannah Montana has that!” Those are just some things that you might here children and teens saying to their parents. When I was young, I grew up with girls like Hilary Duff.  She had the image of a very wholesome young lady. Sex sells was never the case with her. She may have been a Disney star, however, so was Miley. In today’s industry, Taylor Swift is one of the few female artists who have yet to fall into the idea of sex sells.  Why do I imply that she will? Because a prime example of what seemed to be a good girl, is Miley Cyrus.  She was discovered to play the role of Miley Stuart on the hit TV show  ‘Hannah Montana’.   She played a young artist who portrayed a good girl image and was a role model for young viewers.  As she got older she grew out of the character as well as her good girl image. She adapted to the idea of sex sells just so she could continue her music career. Was that a good career move for Miley?  That concept is debatable. Miley lost a significant amount of fans because parents found her to be to risqué. Her moves and clothing choices lost her role model status. Did she gain any new fans after her big leap into her new look?  She very well might have, but all we hear about is her fall from good girl, too bad.  Is it really the artists choice to wear what they do? To dance the way they do?  It is said that they have a choice, but do they? If they want to sell records, and get paid, I would say they don’t really have a choice.  Miley could just be a victum herself of the "sex sells" phenomenon.  She was young enough to be impressionable of the compitition aroung her. She felt as though in order to become more succsessful, she needed to compete with her competetors. Miley cyrus was just a victum to this new fashion of female artists, but she also had the power to say no.

  1. I definitely agree on your piece on Miley Cyrus. While I admit I watched Hannah Montana when I was younger, her approach to growing out of her character was completely unnecessary. Though she is very close to my age and may have had many fans that watched her show who are the same age as myself, she had many more fans who were in fact younger. She was seen as a role model by so many and should have taken that into consideration before she changed her act and look altogether. I could understand that she was nearing those adolescent years and didn’t want to be seen as the “good girl” anymore. However, considering that she was still in the spotlight when she began to change, may very well be the reason why she is now viewed the way she is. With the media’s sex sells concept, perhaps it’s society’s fault she acts and dresses the way she does. As you also mentioned Hillary Duff, I believe her to be the epitome of a great role model. Although I wouldn’t say she’s completely innocent, knowing she did still have many fans, Hillary Duff waited till she was out of the spotlight to change her image. I can’t help but wonder though if it’s Miley Cyrus’s fault for what happened to her? Or did the media pressure in order to keep up with her fans?

  2. It might have been slightly out of context to say that it is directly her fault. However, turning eighteen years old was when her image changed. She knew that she wanted to drop the disney channel attachment and branch out on her own. Now that leads her to the question, " who shall i become?" That descision was no longer decided by disney channel, her father, or anybody but herself. She chose to wear what she did, smoke what she did, and create such a rebelious reputation. Although, can she be blammed for doing what shes done? I dont believe so. She has fallen under the captivating "sex sells" advertising scheme that almost all of america has drifted into. She knew that artists like Lady GaGa, Nicki Minaj were selling records and using their body to do it. SHe could have easily taken another route, but she didnt. She decided she wanted to compete. Slena Gamez has done what Miley Cyrus has done, and i have yet to see her in a sexual way and i still buy her records.
